Getting out and About in the Summer

Over the summer – especially as the weather really begins to heat up – some elderly can feel concerned about venturing outdoors.  But with proper preparation (hydration, sun protection – including cream, hats and clothing), there should be no reason for one to isolate oneself during the summer months.

Of course, it is advisable to not go out in the heat of the day (between 1-3) but even then, in an airconditioned vehicle, or for a short walk it is manageable.  Otherwise, wait until the sun goes down or go out early in the morning.

The next step is to research the local calendar of events geared toward senior people.  One helpful resource has been put out by Not Just Bingo, an organization that seeks to help senior homes (or senior caretakers) plan fun activities for seniors.

In the UK, Ageing Well Torbay has had some great events over the summer.

Established in 2015 as a six-year project, the organization “aims to reconnect communities and reduce social isolation amongst the 50+ populous across Torbay.”  It receives its monies from the National Lottery Community Fund and seeks to provide the framework for the establishment and growth of long-lasting and supporting friendships and communities.  Community builder Marianne Parker explained:

They have evolved into a fantastic bunch of lovely people who all look after each other. They all have everyone’s phone numbers, they give each other lifts to other Ageing Well events, call each other when they have been missed, take flowers and cards to those who are not well. They also celebrate their birthdays with cake and cards together, organise their own trips to the Princess Theatre, go and visit former members of the group who have moved to other parts of the country together, have lunch together and more. Amazing. They didn’t even know each other three years ago!”
