Improving Heart Health

In addition to exercising and eating well, here are some surprising ways to improve heart health:

1. Take care of your teeth:

Scientists have discovered a link between healthy teeth and a healthy heart. There’s evidence that the same bacteria that causes gum infections and periodontitis have been found within the atherosclerotic plaques in the heart. Unhealthy gums can also cause inflammation that increases the risk for heart attacks.

2. Make sleep a priority:

Lack of sleep has been associated with an increased risk of heart disease. In addition, the quality of sleep matters; one study demonstrated that poor sleep quality increases the risk of arterial disease by 34 percent.

3. Boost your emotional health:

Depression is associated with changes in blood proteins and inflammatory proteins that can lead to heart attacks. The mind-body connection can lead to a weakened immune system that can increase the risk of illness. To counteract this risk, make room for positive relationships, exercise and hobbies each day.
