While kids can’t wait for the summer vacation to start, for a lot of other demographics – specifically parents and seniors – the summertime can be quite dreaded. Planning is important and here we look at what is being done to assist the elderly during these months.
Beginning June 25th in various parts Union County, the Board of Chosen Freeholders will be once again offering its annual Farmers’ Market voucher program for seniors. for those who are over 60 and eligible, they will receive up to $25 in vouchers which will enable them to buy fresh produce at designated Farmers’ Markets in the area. According to Sergio Granados, Freeholder Chairman:
“The Freeholder Board is proud to support the voucher program, which helps seniors on a budget enjoy the health benefits of fresh produce. By encouraging seniors to engage with local New Jersey farmers, the program also creates new opportunities for seniors to connect with their community.”
Ensuring that the elderly keep cool in the summer, KOLOCares has teamed up with the Washoe County Human Services Agency to ask people to donate new fans that can be distributed at homes of the elderly (60 and over). Contact the Washoe County Senior Services for more detail or drop off fans at the 1155 E. Ninth Street Building E, Reno between 9 am and 3pm until August 31, 2018.
For seniors who are trying to beat the heat and traveling overseas, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has some tips. Planning again is key and one should check into a line that will be shorter which is just for special needs/family individuals to use. As well it helps to screen larger items (mobility aids) at a faster space. A courtesy non-metallic cane is provided by CATSA for this purpose too. In addition, seniors who have trouble with the fully body scan can opt to bypass the walk-through and instead be scanned with a hand held detector. For medications needed on the flight, prescription (and some OTC meds) actually do not have to be transferred to 100 ml containers.
The summertime should not be one that is dreaded; with a bit of careful planning you and your loved ones can enjoy this season just as much as any other.
