Exercises for Healthy Aging

Although it is true there is no way to stop time or end the natural process of aging, it is definitely possible to march into the future as healthy and strong individuals. In some cases, with the right exercise program, it is possible to reverse some of the effects of aging by maintaining healthy muscles and cardiovascular health.

According to studies, after the age of 30, people can lose as much as 5 percent of muscle mass every ten years, until the age of 50. After 50, the loss is even greater. One research study showed that between the ages of 50 and 70, people can lose as much as 30 percent of their entire muscle mass.

However, with exercise, this loss of muscle mass can be slowed or even halted. Consistently exercising can also help prevent age-related cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and pulmonary disease.

A good exercise program will focus on four basic areas: endurance, strength training, balance, and flexibility. The best exercises designed to prevent muscle loss involve strength and resistance training.

Despite the benefits of exercise mentioned above, it is crucial to remember that exercise alone will not keep you healthy. Take care of what goes inside your body as well. Avoid processed foods and sugar, quit smoking, and limit alcohol consumption. Healthy living, including exercise and avoiding unhealthy substances, will go a long way to preserving health and well-being throughout the natural process of aging.
